Vitamin K1 (Phytonadione) Chewable Tablets (25 mg)
Beef-flavored chewable tablets (phytonadione) for use in cats and dogs to counter
hypoprothrombinemia induced by digestion of coumarin-based compounds, common ingredients
of commercial rodenticides (like D-Con), and other drug-induced hypoprothrombinemia
where it is definitely shown that the result is due to interference with Vitamin
K metabolism (e.g., salicylates). Recommended for use in follow-up therapy only
after administration of Vitamin K1 Injection and hospitalization is no longer
required. Available in two strengths:
25 mg, for cats and dogs that weigh 11-22 lbs.
50 mg, for dogs that weigh more than 22 lbs.
Each chewable tablet contains 25 mg of phytonadione.
NOTE: Regular determinations of prothrombin time response should be
performed to guide in the initial and subsequent administration of Vitamin K1
Chewable Tablets. The dosage should be adjusted accordingly.
CONTRAINDICATION: Hypersensitivity to any component of this medication.
ACTIONS: Vitamin K1 Chewable Tablets for oral administration possess
the same type and degree of activity as does naturally occurring Vitamin K.
The primary function of Vitamin K is to stimulate the production via the liver
of active prothrombin from a precursor protein. The mechanism by which Vitamin
K promotes formation of prothrombin at the molecular level has not been established.
DESCRIPTION: Vitamin K1 Chewable Tablets contain phytonadione with excipients
in a beef-flavored tablet.
DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION: Dogs and Cats
Hypoprothrombinemia (with hemorrhage)-Administer orally at the rate of 2.5-5
mg/kg of body weight (1 tablet per each 22 pounds of body weight for lower dosage
or 1 tablet per each 11 pounds of body weight for higher dosage) daily as conditions
require up to 3 weeks. Frequency and amount of oral administration should be
guided by regular determination of prothrombin time. The smallest effective
dose should be sought to minimize the risk of adverse reactions.
WARNINGS: It is recommended that Vitamin K1 Chewable Tablets be used
in follow-up therapy only after administration of Vitamin K1 Injection and hospitalization
is no longer required. An immediate coagulant effect should not be expected
after administration of phytonadione when administered orally. Phytonadione
will not counteract the anticoagulant action of heparin. Repeated large doses
of Vitamin K1 are not warranted in hepatic disease if the response to the initial
therapy is unsatisfactory. Failure to respond to Vitamin K1 may indicate that
the condition being treated is inherently unresponsive to Vitamin K1.
PRECAUTIONS: Patient may develop temporary resistance to prothrombin-depressing
anticoagulants, especially when given larger doses of phytonadione.
CAUTION: Vitamin K1 Chewable Tablets are sold only to licensed veterinarians.
STORAGE AND HANDLING: Protect product from light at all times. Keep
out of reach of children. Store at room temperature.
VetOne: Supplied as Vitamin K1 Chewable Tablets are available in bottles
of 50 Chewable Tablets.
