Pellitol Ointment
Pellitol Ointment is a unique combination of the natural ingredients echinacea
extract, resorcinol, zinc oxide, calamine, bismuth, and juniper tar in a petroleum
base. It contains no antibiotics.
It has been available to the veterinary profession for several decades and
its efficacy in the treatment of otitis is well know to those practitioners
that employ it.
The Pellitol Advance
There are several features of Pellitol Ointment that provide an advantage in
treatment:
1. The viscosity or thickness of the ointment allows nearly all of it to stay
in the ear canal and not be expelled by head shaking. By doing so it's healing
and soothing powers work for several days. The plastic applicator that comes
with each tube insures ointment will be deposited in the horizontal ear canal.
2. The long lasting effectiveness of Pellitol allows the practitioner to treat
and pack the ears in the office and then send the patient home for several days
before re-examination. This allows the ears to "rest", calm down,
and for Pellitol to do its work. At home the client does nothing except to gently
swab the top of the lateral ear canal with a cotton ball 2 or 3 times a day
to remove any Pellitol that has been expelled.
Treatment Programs
Generally speaking, Pellitol Ointment can be used as follows:
1. Initial therapy in acute otitis.
2. Alternative therapy in chronic otitis.
3. A final preventative step following successful topical antibiotic therapy.
In both the acute and chronic otitis situations treatment should be as follows:
1. Clean and flush the ear followed by otoscopic examination.
2. If no obvious cause of the otitis such as a foreign body, etc is found, pack
the entire ear canal with Pellitol Ointment.
3. Re-check and repack the ears in 3-4 days.
4. Re-check and repack the ears weekly for 2-3 weeks.
As a final preventative step following successful topics antibiotic therapy,
one packing of the ear should be done.
In all cases, the owners should gently swab the top of the lateral ear canal
daily with a cotton ball or tissue to clean up any Pellitol that has been discharged.
