This is an over the counter product - it does not require prescription.
We now have available in highly purified crystalline edible protein fraction trade
named "FOR-BID" which when mixed and fed with dog food curbs coprophagy.
Simply sprinkle on dog food and after the food is consumed, this will impart a
forbidden and unpalatable taste to the feces. This product is not an enzyme mixture
which alters the normal endogenous digestive process. "FOR-BID" has
been used by thousands of veterinarians in both cats and dogs without adverse
reactions and with excellent efficacy. In some cases, the daily rations must also
be changed.
Recommended Dosage
In large dogs, the size of German Shepard's, sprinkle the contents of 1/2 package
on the dog food two times a day for 5 to 6 days (morning and night). This will
usually curb coprophagy for months, often permanently. In small dogs or puppies,
you may give one-quarter of a pack two times a day for four days (morning and
night). For horses, we have reports that one and one-half packs, morning and
night, for 2-3 days appears to curb this habit. Cats: 1/4 packet per day, for
4-5 days. DOGS must also be given "FOR-BID", morning and night. If
Coprophagy starts again after initial dosage, give 1 gram per day (from the
8 gram package) for 2-3 weeks or as necessary. "FOR-BID" is available
in a single dose package.
Points to Consider Regarding Administration of FOR-BID
- Be sure you are not over-feeding your dog because undigested food in the
feces will propagate coprophagy. You are the best judge of this.
- It may be advisable to change the diet. In other words, get something new
in the digestive tract. Try a new diet with a range of B complex vitamins
as well as minerals.
- How does FOR-BID work: You feed the FOR-BID on the dog food morning and
evening. This food then goes thru the gastrointestinal tract and the breakdown
product of FOR-BID is in the feces. The dog is then sensitized to his feces.
The next day the dog picks up his feces and spits it out. The villa of the
tongue are reacting. Be sure the dogs are not on steroids because this will
counter the effect of FOR-BID.
You should see a response after the first or second day. Many vets suggest
to give for five-six days, (morning and evening).
Types of Coprophagy
- Acute- This occurs in your dogs, one to six months old and has started
for one to three weeks: For-Bid is 100% effective.
- Intermediate- Dogs 3,4 or 5 years old that have coprophagy for one to three
months: For-Bid is about 95% effective.
- Chronic- Dogs 5 and 6 years old that have been doing it for one to three
years: This is not coprophagy but a bad habit. Here For-Bid may not work.
If it doesn't, we recommend obedience training or the possible use of muzzle.
